KC Planning Committee

Greater KC Food Policy Coalition (GKCFPC) Steering Committee member Adrienne Moore Baxter (Clinical Instructor, The University of Kansas Medical Center School of Health Professions) introduced the idea of convening a Food Day organizing committee for Greater Kansas City in 2011. The Planning Committee eventually grew to include members representing over 20 organizations: Slow Food Kansas City, Harvesters, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Episcopal Community Services, Johnson County Health Department, KC MO Health Department, Society of St. Andrew West, Lincoln University Extension, University of Missouri Extension, Eat Right Foods, Blue Bird Bistro, KC Dietetic Association, KC Healthy Kids, KU Med, The City Market, Prairie Birthday Farms, KC Food Circle, Les Dames Escoffier, GKCFPC, Good Natured Family Farms, KC Community Gardens, Cultivate KC, and Transition KC, as well as unaffiliated activists.

In addition to the principle’s promoted at the national level, one of which the KC Planning Commitee was responsible for adding, three core messages were developed to promote Food Day in the Greater Kansas City area. Those messages are:

  • Food Day connects us to “real food,” which is local, healthy and sustainable.
  • Food Day challenges the Greater Kansas City community to “eat real” on Oct. 24.
  • Food Day inspires the Greater Kansas City community to create a stronger, healthier, more accessible local food system.

The Planning Committee meets on a regular basis at Blue Bird Bistro. To become involved please contact us or attend our next meeting!
